Dutch rummy with public melds

Jokeren is a Dutch rummy-family name, with household variants in hand size, opening requirements and joker reuse. It is related to other draw-and-discard games, not evidence that a particular tile-game publisher invented it. An exact inventor and first date are not established. We describe Jokeren 13 using a low opening threshold and public melds. Contract-round or seven-card editions need their own rules. Here the first-turn restriction, joker opening value and stock-stalemate procedure are explicitly fixed so there are no missing decisions at the table.

Thirteen each and no starting discard

For 2–4 players mix 2 packs of 52 plus 4 jokers, 108 total. Choose dealer randomly, deal 13 each clockwise, and leave every remaining card in stock. There is initially no discard: in a four-player deal, 52 + 56 = 108. Player left starts. On each player’s first turn draw stock and discard 1, without laying or extending melds. From that player’s second turn, stock or top discard may be drawn. Always discard a different card if you took the discard. Dealer moves left between deals.

Valid groups and the opening thirty

Sets have 3–4 equal ranks in distinct suits; runs have at least 3 consecutive cards of one suit. Ace may be low or high but not wrap through K A 2. Identical copies cannot fill different suits in a set. A joker is assigned one specific missing card, announced aloud; use at least two natural cards and at most one joker per meld by our declared table agreement. To open, lay own new melds worth at least 30 natural-card points in that turn. Numbers count face value, J Q K 10, A 11; jokers count nothing towards this chosen opening threshold. Opponents’ cards and extensions cannot supply the opening.

04 /

Extend and reclaim without rearranging

On later turns after opening, optionally lay more groups or add legal cards to any existing group, yours or opponents’. Do not move table cards between groups. Replace a joker only with the exact card it represents, from hand, and only after opening. Reuse the recovered joker in a valid group that same turn; it cannot remain in hand. All table groups must stay legal throughout and respect the joker limit. Ordinary play ends by discarding 1, but going out may use every card in legal groups and omit the final discard.

05 /

Recycling, penalties and a finite match

When stock empties keep the top discard and shuffle older discards into new stock. If no such cards exist, continue with the available top discard; after a full turn cycle with no table addition or joker replacement, end the blocked deal by our explicit agreement and count every hand. When someone goes out, winner scores 0; others count remaining cards: 2–10 face value, J Q K 10, A 11, joker 25. Table cards score no penalties. Play 8 deals, changing dealer; lowest cumulative score wins, equal leaders share. No elimination or doubled all-at-once bonus is used.

Open naturally, then release a joker

On an eligible opening turn, 10♥ J♥ Q♥ totals 30 and opens without a joker. On a later turn the table contains 6♥ joker 8♥, joker announced as 7♥. Hold 7♥ and Q♠ Q♥ Q♦. Replace the table joker with 7♥, then immediately lay Q♠ Q♥ Q♦ joker, naming it Q♣. Both groups remain legal and no recovered joker stays in hand. An end-of-deal hand A♠ 8♦ joker costs 11 + 8 + 25 = 44, not the opening value of a substituted card.

After opening, replace exactly. Table run: 6♥, Joker, 8♥. Hand excerpt: 7♥, Q♠, Q♥, Q♦. The table joker represents 7♥. Hold 7♥ and three queens. Swap only that exact heart card. Reuse now, not later. Natural run: 6♥, 7♥, 8♥. New queen set: Q♠, Q♥, Q♦, Joker. Natural hearts stay on table. Joker becomes Q♣ in the new queen set; it cannot stay in hand. Replace the exact 7♥ joker, then immediately reuse it as Q♣. Both table groups remain legal throughout.

Common questions

May I open on my first turn?+

No in this selected form. First draw stock and discard; opening starts on a later personal turn.

Can I keep a joker reclaimed from the table?+

No. After an exact replacement, reuse it in a valid meld that same turn.

Is the penalty formula universal?+

No. This page uses ace 11 and joker 25. Other households use different opening thresholds or contract rounds.
